Waitemata Motorcycle Club Inc has been in existence since 1972. Originally an offshoot of the North Shore Motorcycle Club it became its own stand alone club in 1978. The clubs roots in those days were MX, Hare n Hounds, Trials and Enduros. Forest usage was very strictly controlled back then, riding in the trees was not allowed, fire breaks only and arrows were not permitted on the trees. These were the days of the great "Redvale Motocross" events and was also the birth of the "Dead Toad" which was a 4hr Hare Scramble run by a bunch of varsity students, it was then run very successfully by the Chant Family for decades in a 3hr format, but now has a fresh face and modern influences with Chris Birch at the helm! Enduros really came on strong in the mid seventies which were run by the likes of John Nicholson, Barry Rehier, Tjebbe Bruin and Mark Mc Donald who are still around motorcycling today. In the late seventies Barry Rehier and John Nicholson led the fight with the NZ Forest Service to establish a legal riding area close to Auckland which was succesful and is still around today (although now run by private enterprise, and known as "The Kawasaki Sandpit"). Fast forward to 2011 and the club is surprisingly similar to then, although Motocross has taken a back seat to Trail riding, Enduros, Cross country races, Family days and we are now seeing a resurgence in Trials with six events per year now on the calendar, and our involvement in the "Sandpit Trials Park" which is open 5 days a week. We have a team of 20-30 helpers that are consistently running events (20-25 per year) and constantly maintaining or upgrading tracks. It is our policy to provide the cheapest possible events to the highest standard and accordingly none of our members receive payment for work done - they are all there to improve and help our sport prosper and not make a personal gain but most importantly, to make it fun, safe and fair.
